Patented Technology
Powered by AESTECH Engineering
SkySheer showcases Aestech’s patented technology, redefining curtain wall performance through an innovative approach to insulating glass units (IGUs). Unlike conventional IGUs, where the panes can shift slightly within the unit, the SkySheer IGU is engineered to function as a rigid, tubular structure. This design enables the glazing itself to actively participate in resisting wind loads, significantly enhancing structural performance.
The key to SkySheer’s rigidity lies in its unique construction: the secondary seal of a traditional IGU is replaced with a bonded reinforcement that incorporates a pultruded fiberglass profile as a structural spacer. This fixed, high-strength connection maintains a constant distance between the panes, transforming the IGU into a load-bearing element within the curtain wall system.

Why SkySheer
Elevate Your Projects with SkySheer's Frameless Glass Curtain Walls
Wind Load Resistance
When using identical glass assemblies, the SkySheer IGU offers greater wind load resistance compared to traditional IGUs. Unlike conventional curtain walls, SkySheer Glass Walls eliminate aluminum mullions while maintaining equivalent wind load capacity.
The strength advantage comes from SkySheer's advanced double- and triple-pane IGU configurations. Double-pane units are inherently stronger than single-pane due to the insulating air layer acting as a shock absorber. SkySheer’s double-pane IGUs are 58% stronger than standard double-pane units, while its triple-pane IGUs are more than twice as strong as conventional triple-pane alternatives.

Thermal Performance
Without Vacuum Insulated Glass (VIG), the thermal performance of the SkySheer IGU is equivalent to that of a conventional IGU. Standard double-pane IGUs typically offer an R-value between 3.0 and 3.7, but when installed in traditional curtain wall systems, the effective R-value drops to between 1.2 and 2.0 due to thermal bridging caused by aluminum framing often reducing performance by 30% to 40%.
SkySheer eliminates the need for aluminum mullions, allowing glass façades to retain the full thermal potential of double- or triple-pane IGUs. This results in an R-value that’s 30% to 40% higher than a conventional curtain wall using the same glass configuration.
When paired with VIG, the thermal performance of a SkySheer glass façade dramatically increases achieving R-values of R-20 or higher, setting a new benchmark for energy-efficient building envelopes.

Sound Control
Without Vacuum Insulated Glass (VIG), the SkySheer Insulating Glass Unit (IGU) offers a sound transmission coefficient (STC) comparable to that of conventional IGUs.
In traditional curtain wall systems, aluminum framing members reduce the overall STC performance. SkySheer eliminates the need for aluminum mullions, allowing for a frameless glass wall that maintains the highest possible STC ratings achievable with double or triple-pane IGUs.
When combined with VIG, the SkySheer frameless curtain wall system can reach STC ratings of 40 and above.

Optical Distortion
Conventional IGUs are prone to optical distortion in climate zones with wide temperature fluctuations. This occurs because the air or Argon gas inside the unit expands with heat and contracts with cold. Due to the flexible perimeter typically an air spacer and soft butyl the glass panes can bow inward or outward with these pressure changes.
In contrast, the panes in a SkySheer IGU are structurally bonded together, eliminating the flexibility to bow and ensuring a distortion-free appearance regardless of external temperature shifts.

Thermal Expansion
SkySheer’s glass wall system eliminates the need for conventional aluminum curtain wall mullions, significantly improving performance related to thermal expansion. By removing aluminum components from the glass wall assembly, we reduce differential movement between materials.
Aluminum expands and contracts approximately 2.5 times more than glass due to its higher coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE):
-
Aluminum: CTE of 22 × 10⁻⁶/K (22 ppm)
-
Glass: CTE of 9 × 10⁻⁶/K (9 ppm)
This design minimizes stress within the system, enhancing durability and long-term stability.

Life Expectancy
SkySheer’s Insulated Glass Unit (IGU) is engineered for superior longevity through the use of enhanced structural components. A structural fiberglass pultrusion and additional adhesive applied along the air spacer perimeter significantly extend the IGU’s lifespan.
Independent testing by ift Rosenheim confirms a life expectancy of 40 years for the SkySheer IGU double that of conventional IGUs, which typically begin to fail from internal misting after approximately 20 years under ideal conditions.
Additionally, SkySheer’s IGU retains Argon gas up to twice as long as standard units, further improving thermal performance and long-term reliability.
